1. Profile
Institute of Rail Transit Special Material has 5 teachers (material specialists) and 25 graduate students, including 3 professors, 2 associate professors, 8 PhD students and 17 Postgraduate Students.
The institute features special rail transit engineering materials, focusing on the development and application of new materials and technologies of key components for rail vehicles. The research in the fields of new carbide system pantograph strip materials, high-speed friction and wear properties in current-carrying conditions, rail transit self-healing materials, noise reduction porous materials et al, are in the international advanced level.
Institute has the equipments for material preparation and properties tests, including high temperature vacuum sintering furnace, vacuum hot pressure sintering furnace, the large high-speed and current carrying friction-wear test machine, cold isostatic pressing machine, muffle furnace, planetary ball mill, laser particle size analyzer and resistivity instrument et al.
2. Research direction
Institute of Rail Transit Special Material are focused on high speed pantograph strip and contact wire materials, high speed railway brake disk-brake pad materials, noise reduction materials, rail transit self-healing materials, new vacuum contact materials, high performance composite materials composed of metal and ceramic et al.
(1) High speed pantograph strip materials
We take the lead of first application for the Mn+1ACn ternary layered carbide in the field of friction and wear in current-carrying. We invented new carbide system pantograph strip and deeply studied the coupling relationship of force-electro-thermo field. The research results have won the second prize of the ministry of education of institutions of higher learning technology.
(2) Noise reduction materials
The porosity and pore size of oxide and carbide porous materials can be adjusted in a wide range by combining variety foaming method and gel-casting process, the prepared porous materials have limitless application in noise reduction materials.
(3) Rail transit self-healing materials
For component failure caused by cracks, the rail transit crack self-healing materials have been developed. The materials can heal certain size cracks under service condition. The properties of healed materials close to or even higher than that of the starting materials, so it can improve the safety and service life of components and reduce the cost of maintenance.
(4) High performance composite materials composed of metal and ceramic
On the basis of a variety of high purity Mn+1ACn ternary layered carbide, new structural and functional composite material developed using Mn+1ACn and Cu, Al, Fe et al for different application requirements, such as new vacuum contact materials and high speed railway brake disk-brake pad materials.
3. Research project
Institute of Rail Transit Special Material has undertaken 22 scientific research projects, including 1subproject of the state key development program for basic research of China (“973” Program), 1 subproject of key projects in the national science & technology pillar program, 2 the national high technology research and development program of China (“863” Program), 8 national science foundation of China, 1 Beijing government funds for the constructive project of central universities, 3 fundamental research funds for the central university and 3 international cooperation projects et al.
